How To Fix A Noisy Garage Door?

Why You Need Your Garage Door Cable Replaced

How To Fix A Noisy Garage Door – We all hate noise, especially when it comes to doors.

So when your garage door starts to creak, maybe it is the time to do some fixing.

Those noises may be coming from loose parts, worn down rollers, metal parts that need lubrication, or anti-vibration pads for an opener.

But when the noise comes from a broken garage door spring, do not attempt to repair it on your own and call a garage door company like us.

    Ready All The Necessary Things

Before starting renovating that squeaky garage door, the first thing to do is check whether you have all the required tools before proceeding to repair the door.

In that way, you can save time by just doing a single trip to your handy hardware store.

The basic tools to be covered on this repair are the following:

A stepladder for reaching high parts of the garage door, a wrench set for different sizes, a socket or ratchet set, an impact driver, an adjustable wrench, and a 4-in-1 screwdriver.

Most garage door parts have hinges, bolts, nuts, and joints that have different sizes and measurements, so having an all-rounder tool will help significantly.

Another important thing to buy is a good garage door lube, which will be handy later while working.

    Check All Loose Parts

First, look for loose bolts and nuts on your garage door track.

Then with a deep socket and a ratchet to tighten those loose nuts, but careful not to overtighten, it may cause additional wreck into the door or strip the screw holes.

Next to check is the garage door opener chain. A loose garage door opener chain results into unstable door movement, can be loud and make a slapping sound.

Tighten the chain, then apply lubricant or grease to the threads and the chains.

    Replace All Worn Hardware

Garage rollers may break in a dirt environment after several years.

This can be fixed by unbolting and tilting all worn rollers to remove them.

Then replace all worn rollers with new ones one at a time.

If you are frequently changing rollers, you should consider using nylon rollers for better durability but costs more.

When unbolting torsion springs, do not attempt to do this alone, seek for a professional like us for it may cause injuries.

Worn hinges are rarer than worn rollers. Worn rollers can cause doors to bind and wear the joints at different sections of the door.

Replace the hinges when the hinge pin is full of dust and metal fillings.

    Lubricating the Metal Parts

After fixing, tightening, and replacing all needed parts; spray the metal parts with door lube or any lubricant, especially the hinges, springs, and roller bearings, particularly the parts you have replaced.

Also grease any pivot points of the garage door, including the torsion bar bearings.

Do not use any lubricant such as grease and oil, they don’t usually do a better job than a lube intended for garage doors.

If unsure what to use for your repair, come to us for a quick garage door fix.

    Anti-Vibration Pads

Vibrations from opening and closing the garage door may cause the noise, so installing anti-vibration pads will be beneficial for those who have a tuck-under garage.

    Putting the Anti-Vibration Pads

There are different materials needed for installing the anti-vibration pads, so make sure to buy the necessary tools and items before proceeding.

Start with the rubber anti-vibration pads, for it is the most important then a set of hinges for replacing the old one at the garage door opener.

Next are nylon rollers, fender washers, and lag screws, for adding the anti-vibration pads will also add an extra inch in the thickness.

Start by manually separating the garage door opener from the rafters or trusses.

You can use rubber pads for this.

Then cut the rubber pads, in accordance with the size of the garage door opener bracket.

After installing the anti-vibration pads, bolt the four corners of the opener bracket to the rafters or trusses.

These are just the basic and simple repairs you can do to your noisy garage door.

If the noise persists on your garage door and you are within the Pittsburgh area, call us so we can sort your dilemma.
