Every business has its ups and downs, but Randy Laurichs Garage Doors depends on them.
Laurich, who lives in North Sewickley Township, has been installing and servicing garage doors since January of 1986. His company also does entrance doors and windows.
It wasnt the business he had in mind. His desire was to own a bar/restaurant, but a few hours after a chance meeting he was in the garage door business.
From 1974 to 1986 he was employed at Aetna Standard in Ellwood City. When the plant closed he was laid off and collecting unemployment. One day, as he was leaving the employment office, a fellow former worker was going in.
He asked Laurich, Want to put up a garage door?
Laurich said yes, and that day they put up a garage door. When the job was finished, the friend asked him, Want to buy the business?
So in a matter of four or five hours Laurich went from unemployed to owning a business.
It took all the money we had, Laurich said. It was hard getting started. Our first year was bad and if it hadnt been for my wife, Patty, working at the Ellwood City Hospital we wouldnt have made it.
It was learn on the job, and he said that is still the way it is done. He has mentored a number of young men and said anyone with mechanical ability can learn to do it. It is all about the older guys helping the younger guys.
Laurich said the business became successful because of hard work, wonderful, honest employees and great customers.
